It was however the first<br \/>\ngame thatuses a Shuttle.About five centuries later, a game named Battledore and Shuttlecock was<br \/>\nplayed in china,Japan, India and Greece. This is a game where you use the Battledore (a paddle)<br \/>\nto hit the Shuttlecock back and forth. By the 16th century, it has become a popular game among<br \/>\nchildren in England. In Europe this game was known as jeu de volant to them.<\/p>\n<p>A contemporary form of badminton &#8211; a game called Poon, was played in India in the 1800s where a net was<br \/>\nintroduced and players hit the shuttlecock across the net. British officers in the mid 1800\u2019s took<br \/>\nthis game back to England and it was introduced as a game for the guests of the Duke of Beaufort<br \/>\nat his stately home \u2018Badminton\u2019 in Gloucestershire, England where it became popular.<\/p>\n<p>In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a lawn party in his country place, Badminton. A game of<br \/>\nPoona wasplayed on that day and became popular among the British society&#39;s elite. The new party<br \/>\nsport became known as &quot;the Badminton game&quot;. In 1877, the Bath Badminton Club was<br \/>\nformed and developed the first official set of rules.<\/p>\n<p>In March 1898, the first Open Tournament was held at Guildford the first &#39;All England&#39;Championships<br \/>\nwere held the following year. Denmark, the USA and Canada became ardent followers of the game during<br \/>\nthe 1930s and in 1934,<\/p>\n<p>The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed in 1934 with 9 founding members.<\/p>\n<p><strong>England | Ireland | Scotland | Wales | Denmark | Holland | Canada | New Zealand | France <\/strong><br \/>\nIndia joined as an affiliate in 1936.<\/p>\n<p>The first major IBF tournament was the Thomas Cup (world men&#39;s team championships) in 1948.<br \/>\nSincethen, the number of world events has increased with the addition of the Uber Cup<br \/>\n(ladies&#39; team), World Championships, Sudirman Cup (mixed team), World Juniors and the World<br \/>\nGrand Prix Finals.<\/p>\n<p>Badminton was introduced as a Commonwealth Games program sport in Kingston Jamaica in 1966 and has<br \/>\nbeen part of every Commonwealth Games program since. Initially all five disciplines were<br \/>\nincluded \u2013 singles (men, women), doubles (men, women) and mixed doubles with the Teams Event included in<br \/>\nthe program in later Commonwealth Games. Australia has won 11 medals at the Commonwealth Games<br \/>\nbadminton events.Badminton is a relatively new Olympic Games sport. After being a demonstration sport<br \/>\nin Munich in 1972, badminton became an Olympic sport in Barcelona in 1992 with the singles and<br \/>\ndoubles disciplines introduced for the first time in the Olympic Games. In Atlanta in 1996,<br \/>\na mixed doubles event was included and this is the only mixed doubles event in all of the Olympic<br \/>\nsports.Only five countries have won the gold medals since its introduction in 1992 &#8211; China (8),<br \/>\nIndonesia (5) and Korea (5) and Denmark (1). Susi Susanti from Indonesia won the women\u2019s singles<br \/>\nin Barcelona, becoming Indonesia\u2019s first medallist in the 40 years Indonesia had competed at the<br \/>\nGames.
